On Sunday, May 5 at 11:33 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting flames coming from the third floor of a three-story, multi-unit apartment complex in the 2600 block of Fayette Drive. Property management and Mountain View Police evacuated the building occupants before fire crews arrived.

City of Mountain View Fire Department units were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. and the first engine company arrived on the scene at 11:40 a.m. The first engine on the scene arrived to find an active fire coming from an apartment on the third floor of the building. The fire company engaged the flames with a 1¾-inch fire-attack hose line, preventing further spread of the fire into the neighboring apartments.

A second alarm was called to bring additional resources to the scene of the incident. Firefighters from the Palo Alto Fire Department and Santa Clara County Fire Department were requested to assist the Mountain View Fire Department. Santa Clara County Fire units were cleared from the scene, and backfilled Mountain View fire stations. A self-contained breathing apparatus from the City of Santa Clara Fire Department was requested to provide breathing air.

Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul of the unit to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames. The Mountain View Police Department closed Fayette Drive for 3½ hours while fire units and equipment were on the scene.

The American Red Cross was contacted to coordinate temporary housing for nine residents from seven affected apartments while the apartment complex is restored.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $1,000,000.
